EST on Thursdays, the third season marked its debut in a 9:

Paramount Back in the spring, we interviewed a dozen of TV’s top showrunners for New York Magazine’s television issue, and when we asked them all what show made them want to get into television, the majority cited Cheers. But the one who seemed the most passionate about the NBC comedy, which lasted eleven remarkable seasons — , was Michael Schur, co-creator of Parks and Recreation and former writer for The Office. He spoke of it in the kind of loving terms usually reserved for one’s parents, and the influence of the bar comedy shows through in Parks and Rec, which shares Cheers’ sweet sensibility and surrogate-family characters.

As we wallow in TV’s dead zone, with only a few quality shows dotting the cable dial as we wait for the fall season to begin, we decided to have Schur provide an extensive master class on one of television’s all-time great comedies, dissecting exactly what made it work and how it shaped him as a writer. Read on and suddenly you’ll be racing to Netflix to plow through all eleven seasons before fall, but be warned: Extensive exposure to the comedy will only make you judge the networks’ upcoming new comedies all the more harshly.

What special place does Cheers hold in your heart? I felt that way when I was a kid and I was watching it every week, and I felt that way as new TV shows emerged. Cheers did almost episodes over eleven years. The thing that made it so great is it has a giant cast of incredibly great characters and they would get immense mileage out of just having them talk to each other.

The purchases turn out to all be legitimate, but Leslie cancels the card anyway out of embarrassment when Tom Aziz Ansari hears about her unusual purchases, including a “bucket of cake”, a man pillow in the shape of Daniel Craig , and tuition to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, Leslie and Ann find Ann’s ex-boyfriend Andy Chris Pratt , who claims to be volunteering, but in reality, is coming for the free food.

He tells Leslie and Ann that he now has a home with the drummer of his band. Leslie is inspired by the energy of the group and its leader Keef Paul Scheer , which prompts her to take proactive measures in filling in the pit in Pawnee and turning it into a park. While discussing the matter with her parks department, Mark Paul Schneider takes her aside and suggests she simply fill it in without permission.

Leslie decides to take his advice and rents an excavator to fill in the pit.
